Earlier this year, the American Cancer Society had detected that approximately more than fifty-six thousand people had thyroid cancer. Forty-two and four-hundred and seventy were women (42, 470). Fourteen thousand and four-hundred were men (14, 400). Although, this cancer is highly treatable and the procedure of removing the thyroid is common and, from what many have claimed, a “pain-free” surgery, some have developed further complications if it was not caught sooner.
This year, around two-thousand people had passed from thyroid cancer and most were women (1, 090 women and 920 men) (Cancer.org, 2017).

Although the statistics for thyroid cancer tend to be lower than other cancers, such as heart, breast, and more, it is still a serious condition to always monitor and get a routine checkup on, if told so by a doctor. More women have been said to developed thyroid issues over time, but it is still common with men too. There are many signs to keep alert on with thyroid cancer, something that can begin early on which is now being seen with teenagers and young adults.
The most signs are (Mayo Clinic, 2015):
  • Fatigue
  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Constipation
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Puffy face
  • Hoarseness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Elevated blood cholesterol level
  • Muscle aches, tenderness and stiffness
  • Pain, stiffness or swelling in your joints
  • Heavier than normal or irregular menstrual periods
  • Thinning hair
  • Slowed heart rate
  • Depression
  • Impaired memory
With our certified staff, A-1 Home Care’s caregivers are skilled professionals who not only understand how to approach something such as thyroid cancer and how it can be prevented or treated, but they also consult with a senior’s doctor for many reasons. This includes health history, any current and former medications and potential side effects, as well as the best diets, exercises, and lifestyle choices to keep our patients in the best care and condition.
If your loved one is having thyroid issues or is recovering from surgery, you can reach us at our Glendale office at (310) 657-8780 or (562) 929-8400 to consult with one of our agency staff members to find the best fit caregiver to further assist you at home. Each year, seniors lose their spouse and one of the most common reactions during grief is depression. Millions are affected by depression and within the year, about ten percent of the population will develop it–the passing of a loved one is the most common (JED Foundation). A lot of the times, symptoms go unnoticed, including from your parent themselves. It is important to know how the body works and when it is not feeling well.

At A-1 Home Care, our caregivers can help you and your parent understand the signs of depression and how to maintain it. Our 24-hour caregivers have a majority of tools to assist your parent during a difficult time. This includes modernization for your parent from medicine intake, sleep hours, food intake, and especially how they are feeling. Are they more quiet than usual? Have they lost interest in their favorite things such as hobbies?

Some signs to keep an eye out for, which is commonly seen with seniors are (Helpguide, 2017):

  • Sadness or feelings of despair.
  • Unexplained or aggravated aches and pains.
  • Loss of interest in socializing or hobbies.
  • Weight loss or loss of appetite.
  • Feelings of hopelessness or helplessness.
  • Lack of motivation and energy.

A-1 Home Care is a certified agency whose caregivers have a working knowledge of how to handle different mental and physical situations. If your loved one is showing any signs of depression after the loss of a spouse, be sure to call us at our Glendale office at (310) 657-8780 or (562) 929-8400.

Couple and their dog english spaniel having a cuddleIf it weren’t for our parents, we would most likely not be where we are today. They gave birth to us, raised us, provided for us and kept us safe. As adults, we live busy lifestyles and become preoccupied with meaningless tasks. Sometimes we forget to visit or call the people that shaped us to be all that we are. Well it’s time to stop being so self-focused and start thinking about our loved ones. However, it’s not so easy for everyone to just drive down the street to knock on their loved one’s door. It is always a great idea to consider companion care. Some live farther away from their parents and there comes a time when they need the extra assistance. A-1 Home Care in Glendale provides certified caregivers that grow to be companions for your loved ones.

About A-1 Home Care and Caregivers

a-1 home care homecare calabasasYour elderly loved one claims she wants to lead an independent lifestyle, but it’s clear to you that she still needs daily assistance with basic chores, such as cooking, cleaning, laundry and transportation.  Underlying your loved one’s assistance to outside help may include the following: the reluctance to be a burden to you; fear of losing control over one’s life, and denial that one is growing old.  Your parents exhibit behaviors such as the following:

  • Hangs up on you when you suggest having a live-in caregiver
  • Refuses to move in with you or let you move in with him/her
  • Does not heed any advice given by health care team members, friends or relatives
  • Will not agree to any type of caregiver assistance

At this point, you have two choices.  By law, you cannot force your elderly loved one to agree to anything if she is still physically capable of doing things for herself even though she is neglecting her chores and personal hygiene.  The first option is to wait in agony until a crisis happens, such as an unexpected fall resulting in a broken hip.  The second option is to hire a companion caregiver from a private agency like A-1 Home Care in Glendale.  You do not need a doctor’s order to get home care assistance for your loved one, and you can pay for it through long-term care insurance or veteran benefits if one of your parents served in the armed forces.

How do you explain the new caregiver?

You’ve decided to avoid the worst case scenario by hiring a live-out caregiver for your parent.  How do you explain who she is to your loved one?  In a normal scenario, you could just state the truth: “This is __________, who will be assisting you 24 hours a day with chores or anything else you need.  She is a caregiver from A-1 Home Care.”  However, since your loved one has already rejected the idea of in-home care against sound judgment, you can introduce this lady (or male caregiver) as a friend.  Let them build a relationship with you being there, and then let the relationship grow organically as the “caregiver” becomes a companion.

Your loved one is safe with A-1 Home Care

A-1 Home Care is one of the few private home care agencies in California that’s licensed, bonded and insured.  This means that all of our caregivers have a national criminal background clearance, and all professional references are verified.  Established in 1991, A-1 Home Care has been providing exceptional senior care services including Alzheimer’s Care, Diabetes Care, Arthritis Care and more, all of which are covered by long term care insurance and veteran benefits.

2Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a disorder of the nervous system that gradually shuts down an individual’s ability to voluntarily move his muscles.  Symptoms include tremors, rigid muscles, loss of speech, impaired gait, poor posture, slowed movement, and a pill-rolling tremor (back-and-forth rubbing of thumb and finger when the hand is at rest).  As the disease progresses, the individual with Parkinson’s eventually needs assistance with getting in and out of bed.  Sometimes, devices such as walkers and canes are not helpful, because the person’s hand can still slip if the grip is not strong, and oftentimes the patient is not strong enough to push himself up in bed.  If you have a loved one with Parkinson’s at home, and his body weight is too heavy for you to lift or re-position in bed, A-1 Home Care has high quality live-in caregivers who will assist you day in and day out.

What does 24-Hour Parkinson’s Care entail?

Families find 24-hour Parkinson’s Care extremely helpful because they don’t have to consign their loved ones to a care facility and they can still find assistance for their loved ones at home.  Live-in care includes the following services:

  • Assistance with cooking, cleaning and laundry
  • Personal care (bathing, grooming, dressing and toileting care)
  • Prescription pick-ups
  • Transportation
  • Patient lifting, transferring and positioning
  • Round-the-clock stand-by assistance with walking
  • Provide instructions in proper body mechanics to family members
  • Incontinence care
  • Overnight care

Oftentimes, individuals with PD need round-the-clock assistance even with adaptive aids.  If you can’t be home 24 hours a day, it’s very helpful to have a live-in caregiver who is skilled and experienced so your loved one can still maintain an independent lifestyle.
